11 Biopics on Gangsters in Bollywood

Gangsters have always fascinated bollywood and it results into many movies where protangonist plays gangster. In recent times, biopics on gangsters grew in number. Let's have a look:

  • HASEENA- The Queen of Mumbai
Shraddha Kapoor will be seen playing the title role based on the life of don Dawood Ibrahim's sister, Haseena. In this movie, his real brother, Siddhant Kapoor will play Dawood Abraham in this movie. Apoorva Lakhia of Shootout at Lokhandwala fame will direct this film.

  • RAEES
Raees, starring Shah Rukh Khan, is apparently based on the life of the Gujarati don, Abdul Latif Shaikh. SRK fans have been waiting with bated breath to see King Khan try something new and Raees is their dream come true. The film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a significant role.

  • RAI
The film Rai is inspired by the life of former Karnataka's famous reformed don Muthappa Rai. Vivek Oberoi will play Muthappa Rai and the project is helmed by Ram Gopal Verma.

  • BABLOO
Actor Arshad Warsi is all set to play gangster Babloo Shrivastava in a film based on his autobiography, Adhoora Khwab. The film is being directed by Jeena Hai Toh Thok Daal-fame Manish Vatsalya. The director said he chose Arshad Warsi for the role for his 'peculiar sense of humour'.
The film, titled Babloo, will follow UP gangters' early life from 1984 to 1995. How a law student at Lucknow University turns to crime world.

  • ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAI
It is believed to be based on the lives of real-life gangsters Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim, portrayed by the characters Sultan and Shoaib, respectively.

Akshay Kumar played a fictitious gangster based on Dawood Ibrahim.

  • SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA
Shootout at Lokhandwala is a 2007 Indian crime film directed by Apoorva Lakhia. It is based upon the 1991 Lokhandwala Complex shootout, a real-life gun battle between gangsters and Mumbai Police.Dreaded gangster Maya Dolas was hiding in the complex. The leading protagonists in the film have slightly different names than their real-life counterparts and the film caption is "based on true rumors."

  • SHOOTOUT AT WADALA
Shootout at Wadala is a 2013 Indian crime film written and directed by Sanjay Gupta. It is a sequel to the 2007 hit Shootout at Lokhandwala, and it is the second instalment of the Shootout Film Series. It is loosely based on the book Dongri to Dubai by Hussain Zaidi.
The film dramatises the encounter by Mumbai police in which gangster Manya Surve was shot dead. It took place at the junction adjacent to Dr. Ambedkar college, Wadala, Mumbai on 11 January 1982.

  • BLACK FRIDAY
This documentary-drama is probes the 1993 blasts in Mumbai that killed 257 people and the riots that occurred after the bombings. It shows how Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon planned and executed the serial blasts. It is directed by Anurag Kashyap and is based on S Hussain Zaidi’s book of the same name.

  • DAYAVAN
Varadarajan Mudaliar was like a Robin Hood to people from South India living in Mumbai during the 1980s. His life was straight out of the movies and master director Mani Ratnam made Nayakan (Kamal Hasan starrer). Feroze Khan made Dayavan, which was based on the same story, with Vinod Khanna in the lead. Both films met with phenomenal commercial success.


Apart from these Arjun Rampal is playing gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli in marathi movie DADDY.
Gawli has been convicted for murder and is currently imprisoned for life.
